Eider Safari to Bengtskär Lighthouse
May 2026
Finland’s best place to experience sea-bird nesting!
Spring arrives in the outer archipelago, and Bengtskär transforms into a kingdom of birds. The lighthouse island becomes home to hundreds of female eiders — human presence keeps predators away and provides a safe nesting environment.
During the boat journey you’ll see archipelago nature, seabirds and often seals, and hear fascinating local history. Spring weather can be crisp, but the vessels are always warm inside. The route leads through the sheltered inner fairways of the Hitis archipelago towards the outer islands and Bengtskär Lighthouse.
Spring bird experience
In early May:
huge flocks of migrating birds
eider courtship in full swing
magnificent eider drakes in full breeding plumage
the earliest females already incubating
In late May:
fluffy chicks have hatched
the young follow their mothers on land and at sea
Lunch at Bengtskär
The lighthouse’s own wild-fish soup with archipelago bread.
For dessert: Bengtskär’s signature coffee and pastry.
